In the case of pectus carinatum, a brace is generally the preferred approach over surgery for most individuals. Here's why:

  • Bracing is the first-line treatment: Studies show that chest wall bracing is a safe and effective alternative to surgery in correcting pectus carinatum.
  • Less invasive: Bracing avoids the risks and potential complications associated with surgery, such as anesthesia, scarring, and longer recovery times.
  • Success rates: Bracing has good success rates, especially when initiated in younger patients with more flexible chest walls.

A pectus carinatum brace works by applying gentle, sustained pressure to the chest wall and surrounding cartilage. Here's a breakdown of how it works:

  1. Applying Pressure: The brace, typically made of lightweight plastic with metal that wraps around the chest. It has strategically placed pads that gently press against the protrusion of the chest wall. This pressure gradually pushes the bone and cartilage back towards a more normal position.
  2. Targeting Cartilage: The pressure primarily targets the soft cartilage joints connecting the ribs to the sternum. Cartilage is more pliable than bone, especially in younger individuals, allowing for gradual reshaping.
  3. Maintaining Position: The brace holds the chest wall in this corrected or near-corrected position for an extended period. This sustained pressure allows the cartilage and underlying bone to remodel over time, leading to a more permanent correction.

Wearing a pectus carinatum brace requires some adjustment but it should be comfortable. Our team will ensure we maximise the comfort of the brace so it does not interfere with your day to day activities.

The cost of the treatment includes any adjustments they may be required throughout the duration of treatment. We will ensure to get you in as quickly as possible when adjustments are required.
