Pectus Brace - Pectus Carinatum - Chest Bracing

1. Other Medical Conditions(s)

We strongly recommend consulting your GP or paediatric surgeon for a pectus carniatum diagnosis prior to booking in for bracing. Pectus carinatum can sometimes occur alongside other medical conditions so it is best to ask your physician if pressure on your chest is contraindicated by your other medical condition(s). Some of these conditions include:

  • Scoliosis
  • Marfans syndrome/Morqui syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Asthma/respiratory conditions
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Skin disorders (acne/eczema/psoriasis/other)

We are aware of the extensive costs, time and resources associated with accessing these services. If you believe you are a good candidate and have difficulties accessing specialists services for a correct diagnosis, please contact us

2. Age

The best ages for bracing tend to be between 12-17. This is due to the pliability of bone and cartilage between these ages. During these ages there is much more flexibility in the chest and the cartilage and bone respond much better to corrective forces applied by the brace

3. Size

Our braces are designed for a wide range of patient sizes. Measurements for braces are taken around the circumference of the chest at the level of the apex of the pectus prominence. Our braces fit chest circumferences of 68-93cm.

4. Severity

Bracing is the ideal treatment option for pectus carinatum cases of mild to moderately severe  in children. Very mild cases may not progress or be cosmetically significant, eliminating the need for bracing. Very severe cases may require surgical intervention due to the high forces necessary for bracing, which could lead to skin damage.

5. Location

Centered pectus prominences tend to correct better than asymmetric (off to one side) prominences. If you have any question and/or require an assessment, please book an appointment with our specialist orthotists.
